Easter Egg Hunt

Before the schools broke up for Easter holidays, Goole Town Council and Houltons organised a creative easter egg hunt for children from YR 3 at Boothferry Primary School.

The children researched, designed and decorated easter eggs which were then hidden around the venue. They were given a guided tour and explanation of the buildings new facilities, then in groups the children then had to find their way around the building and find their egg. Each child was presented with a chocolate easter egg by Houltons Construction.

In addition to this there were additional prizes for the best 'egg' related jokes - some really egg-cellent ones! only yolking!

What will the new venue provide for Goole?

The main auditorium will seat around 170, in much more comfort than we currently have at The Gate. Here, you will be able to watch films (using a cinema quality 35mm projection system), see theatre, music and dance events, much like at The Gate. The seating will also fold away to provide an open floor area, suitable for rock bands and other events (bowls,
anyone?).

There will be a cafe/bar in the foyer, a large separate workshop room for all our classes and smaller events and upstairs, meeting rooms and offices.

Scheduled to open in autumn 2009, we will begin planning a host of events for the first season. If you have an idea for this, do get in touch!

q A basic description of the project

This project aims to revitalise the centre of Goole and its Victorian Market Hall and bring culture into the heart of the town. The site was previously occupied by an undistinguished warehouse style building, which was occupied by market stalls. Falling tenancies in the market threatened its viability, so these traders have been relocated to the imposing Victorian Market Hall and the empty building extensively re-modelled to create a new facility, business opportunities and jobs for the town and area.

The new building will also house Goole Town Council, which will sell its existing buildings to part-fund the new facility.

r A basic description of the building

The heart of the building is a mixed-use, flexible auditorium. Seating up to 170 in theatre style but also capable of tables and chair or clear-floor layouts, the venue will be used for live events such as theatre, dance, children’s events and music of many sorts as well as having full 35mm projection facilities to enable a second-run film programme.

The ground floor will also feature a café/bar area, ticket office and reception for Goole Town Council and a large workshop room where arts activities and hires will take place. The remainder of the ground floor is occupied by an external, covered walkway which will connect Paradise Place to the Victorian Market Hall through a covered external Community activity space.

The first floor of the new building will house a balcony level to the auditorium, council offices and a large room for community and council use.

s The key innovative and low impact design features of the building

The design includes aims for environmental sustainability, with low energy usage in terms of global responsibility and ongoing running costs being generating factors for services design, with an emphasis on natural ventilation and low energy lighting. As much of the existing building as possible is to be retained, including the concrete slab and the portal frames.

Reduced-flow taps and waterless urinals, substantial insulation and the use of natural floor coverings (eg rubber) over synthetic where possible all contribute to the building’s low impact design features. Energy control systems will automatically turn off lights and water usage when no activity is detected.

Site Storage/Water Pollution

- All storage of materials, chemicals and fuel is in designated areas away from any water course.
- Bulk items are delivered to site in ‘just in time’ deliveries to ensure the site does not become congested and would reduce the amount of waste through neglect or misuse.
- Building chemicals would be stored in clearly marked containers in a secure store and only used by operatives trained in there use.
- All fuel on site will be stored in lockable tanks or secure flam boxes and all plant on site will be fuelled in a designated point on site away from any water course. When empty, full tanks will be delivered to site and the redundant tank removed to avoid spills.
- Fuel and chemical spill kits will form part of the site manager pack.

Air Pollution

- All efforts will be made to ensure the risk of air bourn pollution is at an absolute minimum.
- Where possible all cutting and nuisance activities resulting in dust will be done away from site and the appropriate cut materials delivered ready to use.
- Where this is not possible, dust inhibiting methods will be used such as water feeds to disc cutters and damping down of areas that may create dust.
- All skips will be covered over to reduce and eliminate the dust created from waste products.
- All operatives and subcontractors using the site will be made aware of the requirements through the site induction process and brought to task should this fail.

Water Usage

- Where possible, all materials requiring water addition will be brought to site and the water content recorded on the delivery notes, i.e: Concrete and Mortar.
- Where this cannot be achieved, water consumption will be monitored through a metered supply and this will be posted in the site office on a month by month basis.

Material Recycling

- All timber used on site is supplied from a sustainable source that forms part of the FSC accreditation.
- We have re-used timber formwork used on a previous site for forming the lift shaft walls and we will where possible look at re using timber products throughout the project.

Waste Management

- Waste materials will be separated on site into three different areas, (timber, metal and inert waste).
- All waste materials will be collected by our designated waste collection contractor and passed again through a recycling process.

Energy Consumption

- All site hutments are electrical mains fed and are metered to allow monitoring of energy consumption.
- To ensure no energy is wasted, it is a company standard that all lighting remains on a timer switch so when not in use or when the site is closed there are no lights left on.

Staff Awareness

- All staff, subcontractors and visitors are inducted on their first day to site and made aware of what is required of them and what our targets are in relation to the aforementioned topics.
- All staff working on the site under direct control of GHS are inducted to include the above and in addition have to work in conjunction with our company controls. Each member of staff is given an allocated section of work to progress and within that have their own responsibilities to ensure our targets are met.
- All subcontractors on site are encouraged to follow our guidelines set out above and are reminded of their responsibilities not only at induction stage but also at our pre start meeting and with tool box talks. All subcontractors are encouraged to make use of our materials segregation and asked to remove from site any specialist material waste that cannot be segregated at site level.
- All visitors to site are reminded of our responsibilities and asked to contribute all be it on smaller scale.

The project aims to increase sustainability of arts provision in the town by increasing earned income through ticket sales and hires of facilities
The project aims to increase the sustainability of Goole Market by creating an enhanced entrance way and increasing footfall to this part of the town centre.

The project will contribute to the regeneration of the town centre, as part of the wider Goole Renaissance prospectus.
